The Avenger: A henchman we encountered in The Seven Agate Devils has rubber-like flesh that holds its shape like putty.
These are the same facial characteristics that become The Avenger's trademark. While The Shadow already had his own magazine, these Avenger-like references all appear before the first issue of the magazine. They are some of the raw materials that ended up as Richard Benson.
The putty-like quality is a precursor of sorts of another Street & Smith magazine, The Avenger. This hero was able to mold his features as if they were clay. This ability, coupled with a skillful makeup application allowed him to easily assume other identities.
The guy also likes to push his face up into a permanent smile, one might add, reminiscent of The Joker to come later in the Batman comic series.
Laurence Donovan: This book is another example of Donovan's uneven writing style. The story starts out strong with a good beginning. The scenes involving Tony the shoeshine man are well written and interesting. The problem is that Donovan just couldn't carry the entire book.
