Ethnicity: Doc’s encounter with a farmer early in the story raises some questions about Doc’s ethnicity. The old farmer has just had an unpleasant encounter with the African members of the story. The farmer eyes Doc doubtfully and comments that Doc is not much whiter than the Africans he encountered.
The story moves to Africa and has a scene where a meal is served and the main dish is a white ant pie.
We are told that perhaps no white man would appreciate this dish, the flavor might be strange for a Caucasian palate, and that Doc Savage viewed the dish with relish.
If this were an exercise in logic then the above items would lead one to conclude that since no white man would like or appreciate this native dish and that Doc Savage not only liked it but actually relished it then one could conclude Doc Savage was not a white man. True? I don't know. It's certainly an interesting item in the story.
Aside for that little part, the fact that Doc seems to view the pie as a delicacy made me question if perhaps Doc has been a visitor to King Udu's home before or at least to this particular region. Doc speaks the language well and knows the customs. Perhaps he spent some time with one of the tribes as part of his training as a youth? Could King Udu himself have been one of Doc's mentors?
