Doc Savage 60

February 1938

THE MOUNTAIN MONSTER

Western Historical Manuscript Collection: This story is credited to Harold A. Davis.  Dent frequently used Davis as a ghostwriter to produced Doc Savage stories based on Dent's own outlines. There is no material available on this story in the archives.

Mental Telepathy: This story reveals telepathic abilities with two of the Doc Savage crew.  The story explains that Monk Mayfair and Ham Brooks have been conducting private experiments in telepathic communication with extraordinary results.  Just how much influence Dent had on this one is a bit of a mystery.  The University of Missouri has the originals of Dent's manuscripts but not those of stories Dent did not write.  There is nothing available for this story.  Does that mean Dent didn't have anything to do with it or does it mean the papers were lost?

Dent did introduce the subject of mental telepathy first in Mystery Under the Sea.  It appeared again in The Midas Man and then escalates with The Mental Wizard.  It seems to be a subject Dent likes to use.

Lester Dent: Dent and his wife began a six-month tour of Europe in February 1938.

One of the characters in the story is reading an issue of The Shadow.

February 14, 1938 – The British Navy opens a base at Singapore.
